All products offered by Light Ideas on this site are fully compatible with individuals who may be experiencing various stages of dementia. Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia are more recognized today than ever before. Currently, 4 million people suffer from Alzheimer's, a number that could reach 14 million by the year 2050. Because dementing illnesses affect perception and spatial orientation, creating environments in which people with dementia feel comfortable and secure presents special challenges.

Damage to the brain from Alzheimer's can cause a person to act in altered or unpredictable ways. Anxiety, agitation, repetitiveness, wandering, shouting and sleeplessness are some of the most common behavioral symptoms.

Light Ideas has substantial experience in designing interiors that provide a positive and calming environment for residents. Our design expertise includes all the factors that need consideration including flooring, windows, wall treatments and furniture. We are committed to developing innovative care settings.

Appropriate design should have a positive effect. Patterns should be representational, not abstract. Soft, contrasting colors are key to creating foreground and background depth perception. Hallways, rooms, common areas, dining areas that represent natural, warm colors express dignity, respect and positive values. Abstract or ambiguous environments consistently elicit a negative response. Chaotic patterns are not appropriate. Flooring with contrasting colors creates mobility problems for people with uncertain depth perception.
